1. The 2013 movie poster that reveals the film will be in 3D.
The posters for this film were designed by Concept Arts, a company that also created images for Gangster Squad, Argo, and Green Lantern.
2. The 1974 movie poster.
A New York Times review of the film had this to say: “The sets and costumes and most of the performances are exceptionally good, but the movie itself is as lifeless as a body that’s been too long at the bottom of a swimming pool.”
3. Jay Gatsby now.
In an interview with Vulture, director Baz Luhrmann said he chose DiCaprio early on for the role of Gatsby. He also admitted that DiCaprio went to see all of the auditions for Daisy.
4. Jay Gatsby then.
Jay would’ve been played by Marlon Brando, but the producers couldn’t meet his salary demands. Robert Redford got the role instead.
5. Daisy Buchanan now.
Amanda Seyfried, Rachel McAdams, Keira Knightley, Blake Lively, Michelle Williams, Natalie Portman, Eva Green, Anne Hathaway, Olivia Wilde, Jessica Alba and Scarlett Johansson were also considered for the role. They decided on Carey Mulligan.
6. Daisy Buchanan then.
Natalie Wood turned down the role of Daisy after the producers insisted on a screen test. The part eventually went to Mia Farrow, who was pregnant during filming. (Hence all those close-ups and flowy outfits.)
7. Nick Carraway now.
Oh, hello, Tobey Maguire, welcome to the role you were born to play.
9. Tom Buchanan now.
The role would’ve gone to Ben Affleck, but he had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts, or whatever. Joel Edgerton is playing Tom instead.
11. The romance then.
The lack of chemistry between Farrow and Redford was widely acknowledged in reviews. Farrow said she couldn’t connect with Redford because the actor spent all his free time obsessing over the Watergate scandals. Perhaps not coincidentally, Redford would end up playing Watergate reporter Bob Woodward in All the President’s Men two years later.
13. The costumes now.
Designed by Luhrmann’s wife, Catherine Martin, who is also an Academy Award winner for her creations.
16. The costumes then.
The designer, Theoni V. Aldredge, won an Academy Award and BAFTA Award for Best Costume Design.
19. The movie soundtrack now.
The 2013 soundtrack is scored by Jay-Z and features titles by Lana Del Rey, Florence and the Machine, and “Back to Black” performed by Beyoncé and André 3000.
20. The film’s soundtrack then.
1974 saw songs by Nick Lucas, Irving Berlin, and Cecil Mack and Jimmy Johnson.
21. Baz Luhrmann, the screenwriter (and director) now.
With the help of Craig Pearce, who also helped pen Moulin Rouge! and Romeo + Juliet.
22. Truman Capote, the screenwriter then.
Capote was the original screenwriter before being replaced by Francis Ford Coppola. In Capote’s draft, Nick was openly gay and Jordan Baker was a lesbian. He was fired, and Coppola finished a script in three weeks.
25. Gatsby’s parties now.
In typical Luhrmann fashion, there will be dancing! Carey Mulligan said of the party scene, “When we shot those party scenes there were 300 or 400 people in a frenzy, dancing and drinking. Baz would be screaming crazy things down a megaphone and the extras were hysterical.”
